I have also chosen after much deliberation to purchase a HD Compact Camcorder Panasonic SD60 - the reason behind this being also to capture stories, people and places. After a lot of research and looking at a lot of cheaper camcorders I came to the conclusion that in order for an Amateur to capture watchable HD footage - I would need to invest in a higher end product. The Macbook Pro was purchased as an upgrade from my old Laptop (Sold $500) - main reason being the fantastic battery life and the compatability with all other electronic gadgetry.
