6 Weeks Out..What To Do?

6 weeks to go
Make sure you have organised your Plane ticket and you have all relevant visa documents required to enter UK .
Also double check that you have a valid passport and that it is not going to expire whilst on your travels.
There are a few companies that can open you a UK bank account before you actually arrive in the UK guided you have the correct funds. ( takes a number of weeks- so now is the time to do it if you plan on doing this).

Look into the different types of travel insurance Travel Insurance. There are all types of different policies. Make sure the policy you get covers everything you intend to do. Some policies dont cover the more adventurous things you may intend doing such as bungy jumping, canyon jumping & skiing etc.
Fill in a tax return and make sure all your finances are up to date. If you have any loans or debts, either pay them off or arrange for payments to be made regularly whilst you are away.
Start working out what you are going to do with all the stuff you have accumulated over the years
Getting Rid of Stuff. Work out what you want to keep, what you want to throw away, what you want to store and what you want to take. Is there anything that you can sell to make some extra money?

Make sure you keep some sort of list of all the things you store and where.
This will make finding things a lot easier when you return

5 weeks to go
Organise a check up with your doctor and get any vaccines you need. Make sure you get vaccination certificates and you know exactly what you have been vaccinated for.
Make an appointment to see your dentist before you go. The last thing you want is your teeth giving you problems whilst travelling.
If you have a mobile phone; work out if you are going to take it with you and if you will require global roaming or if you will need to Unlock the Phone to Overseas networks.  If so, talk to your network provider.
Get a Power of Attorney organised to handle all your financial and legal matters whilst on your travels. This should be your Mum - ensure someone will be looking after your financial and legal affaires whilst you are away.

4 weeks to go
Notify post office, bank, credit cards etc of address that all correspondence can be forwarded to. It is probably advisable to send all this to your Mum or power of attorney.
If you are renting a flat or own your own home inform the utilities companies (gas, electricity, water etc) of your planned departure date and ensure all outstanding bills will be settled. If renting it is advisable to ask your landlord for a reference, as this will help you when looking for new accommodation at your eventual destination.
If you are travelling to the UK via other countries make sure you have all the relevant visas for entry clearance into the countries you plan to visit on route. Notify your local council/government that you are leaving to go travelling and that you will be unable to vote. This may save you paying a fine for not voting at election time.

3 weeks to go
Three weeks before you go is probably a good time to print off some bank statements showing that you have sufficient funds to support yourself. When entering the UK the customs people sometimes ask for proof of how much money you have. This is just standard practice and should not worry you. It is advisable to get an international drivers license. You can drive in the UK on your Australian/New Zealand/South African driving license but apparently only for 12 months.
Make sure you book
accommodation for your travels and your final destination. Nothing is worse than arriving in London with nowhere to stay.

2 weeks to go
Meet with your bank to change your account status. It is also advisable to get a letter of reference from your bank manager, as this is likely to help you when setting up a bank account in the UK.
If you plan on getting work through a recruitment company once you have arrived in the UK it is advisable to send your
resume (CV) prior to arriving. This way they will know whom you are when you ring up for an appointment.
Send your resume to your own
email account
and make sure you are able to access it.
Photocopy important documents, such as visas, travellers cheques, passports, vaccination certificates etc email one copy to yourself and leave the other with family or a close friend.
